If it were me, and if I really wanted the free Walmart-exclusive FP free plan "relatively soon", I'd probably order from FreedomPop GSMT SIM card Activation Kit FREE Cell Phone Service 4G 5G BYOD | eBay while it's still available. There are only 3 remaining at this time.
I'm trying really hard not to pay scalping prices but I wouldn't mind if it had to be that way. Right now I won't need one for like another 2 or 3 months maybe even longer so that's where I'm at right now. I said relatively because time goes by a lot faster than you think. 
That plan was discontinued a long time ago, PEW. Unfortunately, there are still live pages on the FP website that make it look like it's still available.
If you were to order ONLY that FP SIM/plan from walmart.com, the total would be $16.98 + applicable sales tax. Of course, if you can add other items you may need from Walmart to increase your total order amount, you could get free shipping.

You used to be able to activate the plan on a redpocket tmo sim - is that no longer possible?
Correct. That stopped working around 11/1/22.
Unreal, yep, FP sent me an Unreal SIM with a Redpocket return address. LOL
Anyway, since it's an Unreal SIM, they have to escalate it to Unreal to swap the SIM and I have to wait. Unreal!

Well, they set up the Unreal SIM and it works now.
Both the Walmart and Unreal SIM were GSMT. Curious, when did GSMT mean AT&T network? I always thought GSMT was TMO and GSMA is AT&T.

Well, more Unreal experience. So from activation, being on wifi, and not using the iPhone much, it used 2.4 MB. Meanwhile, the Freeup Mobile, moved to a Samsung phone, did not even register a MB used. I guess it's a really good thing this Walmart FP Plan has a hard stop when allotments run out.
To be clear, are you saying that you were able to register for the free GSMT Freedompop plan using an Unreal sim?
Not completely. The Unreal SIM was actually a replacement SIM sent by Freedompop so it took escalation to get it registered to be used on my Walmart FP plan. BTW, CS rep said the Walmart FP plan is no longer available, I guess from Jan 1 onward.
For whatever it's worth, I just successfully activated a new FP Walmart Free Plan SIM kit I'd gotten back in March 2022. At least FP is still allowing activations of previously purchased FP Walmart Free Plan SIM kits.
