FreeMii

Great thanks sblake5 I am getting closer to signing up. Just trying to decide on pink or red lol. If you could let us know your ping and speed when you get activated please that would be useful.

Apparently they will have tethering plans later on but freemii couldn't tell me if there would be an upgrade path to a membership with tethering. I hope so. They have been responsive with answering questions which is reassuring.

Hi Isamorph,

Can you provide some links to your research?

Thanks!

Hi all has anyone in the USA got a USA phone number when you got your freemii ? Do you have to dial the following crap to make a call?
" Always dial the number in the full international format i.e. dial either using the '+' sign or '00' followed by the full international code, then the number you wish to dial."
And to receive a call ?
"Calls can be received on either the UK number or the US number at any time in any country. However there will be an additional cost for receiving calls on the USA number as compared to the UK number."
freemii support site about making calls https://support.freemii.com/support/solutions/articles/65000165314-making-calls
freemii support site about receiving calls https://support.freemii.com/support/solutions/articles/65000165312-receiving-calls

I activated my phone and asked for a new number on AT&T. I am in the USA and was given the correct area code for my area. I do not have to use the format that you show in your post. I dial the 10 digit phone number when I want to make a call.

I have Freemii on the AT&T network with a USA Number I just dial any number like I would any phone.all calls text and Data is unlimited. There are 3 network to choose at ordering. How ever T-Mobile and Verizon networks are in beta and usually takes up to 3 days to activate At&t network usually takes up to 15 mins to activate This is mentioned on the Freemii website

No problem here with my AT&T sim and USA phone number. Best call support.

Edit: the links you listed above may be there for future info or third party app for international calling. In the FreeMii FAQs, I saw the following about restrictions:

"Yes. Currently we do not support international voice or messaging. If you'd like to connect with friends and family internationally, a third-party app that uses data connectivity will be required."

I suspect that the international dialing format was specific to the international WorldSIM that FreeMii used to say they were using. I know there are still remnants of old information on the website for that SIM. (Including, at least until well after this thread started, providing APN settings for WorldSIM.)

Thanks
Have you used verizon before and if so are they your typical speeds? Seems low for what looks like good signal strength. They could be throttling video I suppose since you used fast.com. Are you seeing the same with speedtest.net?

Thanks again.

I have Verizon as my regular cell service. The speed seems about the same at home and is better away from home. It does read higher on Speedtest. 4.79Mbps.

I think FreeMii might go broke if they offered 5G speeds and unlimited data, for expensive 5G speeds will evidently suck up one's phone data in seconds. My take is that sufficient 4G speeds are all I need on a phone, but, that said, 5G speeds for home Internet and the important infrastructures throughout the world is a big plus and necessary improvement as the world moves forward.

"Putting aside the question of how much more it'll cost per month to get 5G or how fast a 5G connection will be, if I were to download a 1GB movie, I'd use up 1/10th of my data in three seconds. Then, let's say I want to stream a few 3D games to my smartphone. Surely, that'll chew through a few more gigs — again, within seconds."

There is a section on the website that mentions "5g connection" but it talks about connecting to social media so I don't think they meant 5g data speeds. There are a few things like that that seem left over from a previous offering. Like they required you to connect to social media as part of the membership before.

Well, regardless, there is always the throttling clause that would prevent abuse. It's really not a problem if you use '5G' amounts of data in the middle of the night versus 'LTE' amounts of data during the day.

That's true about the throttling, but now that I think about it, I think the problem about whether faster speeds use more data than slower speeds performing the same task is true or false has been discussed on the forum before, possibly when talking about TextNow or some other MVNO having the option to control speeds. It seems that one could download say a 1 GB file with 5G in seconds and download the same file in 15 minutes with a slower 4G speed and the amount of data used would be the same at both speeds. But, would it? I've noticed that when doing speed tests on speedtest.net, the faster download speed I have the more data was used during the test. But that hunch need to be looked at more closely.

For files of fixed size the speed won't affect the amount of data used.

When streaming video, however, slower data speeds will usually cause a lower quality (and smaller) version of the video to stream.

If I watch Hulu, unthrottled, a 43 minute show uses about 1.8 GB. By throttling it in my router the picture looks the same (to us, at least) and a 43 minute show only uses about 400 MB.

For those who have obtained a FreeMii sim and used it for a while, have you figured out how they intend to make money? I thought their website said something about selling some sort of add-ons, but if it's unlimited talk/text/data, I'm not sure what they could upsell people on to make money and keep the business going.

Just got my sim and activation letter. The number to activate in the letter goes to a full mailbox and the link on the support site goes to a 404 error page. Chat with customer service provided a link that work so I tried to activate with porting my at&t prepaid number. Not too impressed yet. We will see.

Not sure what you mean by activation letter and activation number neither of which I received with mailed sim package. The letter I received just provided the number to contact and talk with David Barkley who said he would like feedback and could also guide you through the activation process. The sim cardholder that also came in the mail said to visit 1.FreeMii.com/Activate 2. Complete Activation Steps 3. Restart Device 4. Confirm Activation

I, too, got the 404 error just now, but was able to get to freemii.com without problem, where the activation page can be found. EDIT: I tried going to the activation site from the FreeMii website and no dice. Hope they aren't going out of business already and, if so, I hope Paypal will reimburse me.
