alexdm rearranges to become "am DLex"!
Yikes!
Hello again, the coupon expired, but if you want, you can try calling Customer Service and ask for it.
Hope it helps!
I'm getting 9.11 Mbps.
Wifi turned off, about 3 bars LTE
40mbps down in places on Tello

Today, before I used up my 200 MB I started seeing bandwidth in the 5 Mbps range, so that was a positive.

I was anxious to see how Hangouts would work on 2g (64kbps) data and it works surprisingly well. We're driving through Alabama, right now, and I just called my store manager. Call quality was respectable, if not quite as good as cellular. If I gave cellular an "A" I'd give Hangouts on 2g data an easy B+. No usability issues that I can see.

I pay for a number of phone plans for friends who can't afford it and who need more than an Obama phone provides. When free plans went away I snagged Mad Bottomless Orange for everyone. I needed to keep everyone on a $10/mo or less budget if I was going to be able to sustain this and it looks like a $6 Tello plan with Hangouts will be the solution.

I've been surfing the web with Opera Mini and Puffin, and have been using Facebook Lite. I'm more than satisfied with the usability of 64 kbps "economy" connection.
That's good to hear. Someone on Social mentioned testing it with the textnow app on a 30 kbps connection a while back and was satisfied with the performance. A few days ago, I told a family member who doesn't have home internet that Hangouts Dialer might work on the throttled 2g for making outgoing calls using a GV number. It's a non-technical user, but they seemed opened to trying it.
I'll need to get them on one of those lite browsers also. This will be their first experience with throttled data ever, and it will occur on their Tello plan that will run out of the 200 MB before the month is over.
I prefer Opera Mini but sometimes their compression server has a bad day and I'll have trouble loading pages. Puffin is my backup for those days.
I've been using FB Lite for over a year and it's close to bulletproof. It loads so fast that you'll think you're still on LTE.
Puffin and Opera Mini don't load pages as quickly as FB Lite but they load fast enough not to be frustrating.
ive got ferocious jr on opera mini on bad om days jr users the pre installed chrome. but for the life of me i cannot get fb lite to install when i go to play store it always says not available in your country. ferocious jr's phones been on tello since the 8th. the account says its got about 50mb left of the 200 so ill know(hear about) by the end of the weekend what the unlimited 2g looks like. but from all reports here i shouldnt be worried. if hang outs works reasonably well there should be no complaints about pokemon go.
FB wants those of us who live in the USA to use the separate and equally bloated Facebook and Messenger apps. FB Lite is available in the Play Store in much of the rest of the world.
The most reliable place to get it is apkmirror.com, which is run by the fine folks at AndroidPolice.com.
Facebook Lite is compact, fast, works on poor quality intermittent connections, and has Messenger built in.

I just tried this coupon and it said EXPIRED! I thought it was good until Feb 20th?
I just created my Tello account and was in the process of porting my phone/line from RingPluss to Tello when I tried the coupon. The coupon said expired, so I did not continue . I figured I was spelling it wrong or something like that. So I have not submitted my port request yet and I am not sure what to do at this point. Maybe I should just let it go to Ting and wait for another $10 coupon before I port to Tello? Who knows, maybe I will like it at Ting? But I was all set to pull the trigger to Tello when I got the expired message.
Tello responded a few posts back in this thread:

Thanks... I just tried and all they could offer me is a 50% off the first month on a plan. Not Pay-As-You-Go.
Looks like I will be staying with Ting.
Maybe the early expiration of the $10 coupon is a sign that I should not go to Tello and I should check out FreedomPop?
Or stay with Ting and use up that $35 credit they are offering.
I wonder how long that $10 coupon was good for? 3 days?
I used it on February 10th but I don't know how long it was active before or after that.
Thanks... I remember reading somewhere, I think it was a Tweet that the coupon was good until Feb 20th. Do we know for sure that was the date and Tello just decided to end it early or was the 20th not the real date?
I guess they gave so many of them away, they ran out of money. I heard even existing customers (non RingPlus) were taking advantage of it. Maybe that is why Tello pulled it early?
I guess at this point with the mass migration only 5 days away, I will just stay with Ting. That will be easier and I will be getting $35 in credit. If I like it, I will stay there. If I don't like it, I will try Freedom Pop. If Tello comes out with the $10 off coupon, then I will switch to them. Otherwise, Freedom Pop is looking pretty good to me right now.
Thanks for this . downloaded it onto my phone last night and jrs today. Jr has to give it two weeks before changing back. I already like it for built in messenger. I found the built in data meter although I don't have anything to compare it to I like that it's there and I can start comparing it now.
Prior to Tello's update in this thread, I had posted this a few pages back in this thread:
https://nthcircle.com/forum/ringplus/45-tello?start=90#1023
Thanks... I knew I read it somewhere. I guess they changed their minds. That's a bummer.
I tested Opera Mini and Puffin on my phone using a 2 to 3 Mbps connection using the extreme mode and low quality and optimize modes in the respective apps. I didn't see much difference with Opera Mini vs. Chrome but Puffin was definitely faster. I would like to see how they compare on throttled data. I should have tried it when I still had BBQ Brisket!
The person in question doesn't use FB, so that is not an issue for now, but maybe later on.
