I don't consider our Fire 7 "garbage". It's not perfect, but if I compare it to other tablets in the $50 range (at normal retail price), it seems more than competitive. At $30......what do I even compare it to? (I guess it would be fair to compare it to that Simple Mobile Fiesta 2, which should outperform the Fire 7 albeit on a smaller screen.)
We're not using it for intensive tasks, though. (All the ones I've set up do have Google Play on them.) I've disabled as much as I can of the Amazon ecosystem, and deleted the few apps that can be entirely removed. If the $50 sale price on the Fire 8 isn't out of reach, I would recommend that as the better option.
My wife uses her Fire 7 to manage her Kindle library. She reads on a Paperwhite, but can't read the book titles in bookshelf view. My goddaughter uses her Fire 7 as an ebook reader, TV viewing, and internet browsing, and likes it a lot-- but she doesn't have anything else to compare it to.

I don't know that I'll actually use this, but it's been something I've been wondering about. Seems a good chance to figure out if I'll use it, and the deal works for me. Thanks!

Target also has the FreedomPop pre-loaded 12-month /1gb SIM card for $39.99. Shipping free to your local store if convenient. These apparently have to be scanned specifically to make them active in Freedompop's system, so a local pickup where you can confirm that's been done might be a good idea. (This only makes sure the SIM # itself is registered in FreedomPop's system, you can still elect to not activate the SIM for your use until later.)
