FreedomPop Free Monthly plan back at Target

The FreedomPop plans that I abandoned months ago were all GSMA.

EDIT Correction: I ddn't abandon all the lines: my wife gave her line to a friend.
Her friend is happy with FreedomPop and actually enjoys the monthly Chat sessions needed to renew.

Tried to renew today, they could not renew it either... says to stand by.

Tried renewing today with the usual problems, so I went to the online chat...

Here are the highlights from it (sorry that it is messy !!) :

Welcome to FreedomPop! My name is Marivic, how may I assist you today?

My line needs renewal & the app refuses to work for that - please renew it for me ??

Marivic
Thank you for reaching out, and I'm really sorry you're experiencing this issue. Please allow me to check your account and assist you with your concern.

Marivic
upon checking your app version it is the old one. Can you please update the app and try again

my phone is not showing any update for it, sorry. I checked.

Marivic
Can you please uninstall/install the app

no. too much hassle. if you won't renew it I'll just remove fp.

Marivic
I understand however we have already updated the app and if you still getting an error with the new version then we will escalate to further investigate and request to renew your plan

no idea what all that means. either renew now - or I'll quit fp for good.

Marivic
I will request to renew your plan as one time courtesy and check if they will approve it. May i know what is the error message that you are getting when using the app?

no error message - it just goes round & round to the same screen again & again asking me to 'upgrade' or renew...

Marivic
Thank you. Please stay connected while i am requesting to renew your plan

Marivic
Thank you for waiting. Please stay connected as i am still requesting for plan renewal.

Marivic
Thank you for patiently waiting and apologies for the long wait. We were able to renew your plan and the account is now back to active status. Please uninstall/install the app on your next renewal date and use the app to renew your plan. If you encounter an error, please contact us again

So there went ~20 minutes of my day & it does look like the final go-round with fp, for me now.

BTW, it looks like saying Android 15 and App v1.7.0 is not current enough - can anyone here tell me what their latest version may be ??

Anyhow...
Once that phone is set free of fp I have a friend who needs a better phone - so this all can lead to greater happiness for all concerned.

Thanks for reading.

App v2.0.0. is the latest.

I am on Android 13 and App 2.0.0. Still could not renew. It's something on their end, maybe this is just their way to deactivate the free lines.

My suspicion agrees:

More & more I see fp as a very silly thing to bother with anymore.

On a semi-related note, even though I've kept a Textnow line for years with wifi-only usage, I still find that their 'support' is non-existent in any practical terms.

Of course it is wisest IMO not to expect real support from a free service, but I have paid TN to keep that number & still even from their app it is not possible to reach them.
Meh.

Which plan was this, GSMT or GSMA?

Greetings Redrotors !!
GSMA.

AFAIK our state only has AT&T & Verizon - so unless TMobile is now somehow using AT&T towers GSMT is useless for me.
(Here at home there is ONLY AT&T coverage.)

Thanks, what I figured.
Haven't seen any success stories in the past week re GSMT renewal.

Not sure if this conversation is accurate or not, but somebody on Reddit chatted with a Freedompop manager who essentially said that the 300 1000 100 GSMT Walmart plan is discontinued.

Users have 30 days from their last service date to port out or change to a different Freedompop plan. Failure to move off of the 300 1000 100 GSMT plan within that time period will result in that number being lost.

Saw that post on Reddit also. Somewhere in it, it said "I tried checking the number but there's no record found" from Marvic. Sound to me like that poster let the line lapse and HIS plan was discontinued.

Didn't sound like he "let" the line lapse...he couldn't get it renewed. And according to that Redditt post, he was told flat out that the GSM-T plan was no longer being offered.

For whatever reason, it couldn't be found so it couldn't be renewed it but the GSMT IS no longer being offered. Neither is the GSMA plan.........not for sale. If you do find one, like on eBay, they won't activate it. It does sound like they are only renewing the existing GSMA free plans...... for now.

But, wouldn't be surprised if FreedomPoP graciously allows a few more months of Chat pleading on the GSMA free plans before they're all kiboshed.

Just a matter of time.....

Just got the email from FreedomPop - GSMA free plan is dead on July 6th.

FP email:

Valued customer,

We’re writing to let you know about an important update to your FreedomPop service.

Starting July 6, 2025, we’ll be ending our free phone plan on the current network your plan is on. We know changes like this can feel overwhelming, so we’re giving you 30 days’ notice to plan your next step. If your phone is currently inactive, you’ll also receive a free month of paid service so you can decide what’s best for you without losing access.

Here’s what you can do next:

Option 1: Choose a new FreedomPop plan

We have paid plans starting at just $10/month that include unlimited talk and text—simple, affordable, and easy to keep.

See Our Plans

Option 2: Move your number to another phone company

If you’d rather switch to a different provider you can keep your phone number. Many FreedomPop users find our sister brand, RedPocket, to be a simple, reliable next step.

See our Plans

No matter what you choose, you’ll have time to make the move.

Why this change is happening:

The free plan was created with the best intentions to provide access and value, but due to rising costs and misuse it has become unsustainable. Providing affordable plans and quality of service is our commitment. Retiring the free plan makes sure we maintain those core values.

We know this may not be welcome news. We are committed to keep things simple, transparent, and supportive. If you need help making a choice, our team is here for you.

Visit our Help Center or give us a call at 1-424-317-9266.

Thank you for being part of the FreedomPop community.

Unsurprising.
This seemed inevitable based upon their attempted coercion & enforced hassles for a long time.

Pay fp ??

Not in this lifetime !!

IMO, all fp deserves is to be forgotten - so many of our other temporary services were more memorable - but fp has always just been...meh.

Name a so called 'free' service that lasted as long as FreedomPop. There isn't one. They began in 2012. They just couldn't figure out how to kill it. One that comes to mind as having been an absolute train wreck was FreeMii. It was 'free' but it has an membership fee that was initially a one time fee but it became annual and thee kept increasing until they finally ghosted their customers.

FreeMii was great while it lasted, for early players. My $170 or so got me around 3 years of service. They did die an ugly death, though. So, on to Helium, let's see how long they're around.
