Got & replied to both email & PM...
I've had the free TN for years - had their paid deal for a very short time too - and at one point we even had 2 free accounts there.
Ditched the faux-cellular as it was useless & couldn't even make a call with it, but their app on a non-activated older phone works fine via wifi only, and that is what the 'invoice' pertains to.
Seems to me they are likely as trustworthy as Freedompop - so I'll be keeping close watch on whatever happens with TN.

All is generally well in our own little space here.
Of course, like most folks we are concerned about the recent difficulties.
For us, presently the worst of it is how devastated the supplies at our local market have remained with only vastly lower quality foods carrying doubled or even tripled pricing.
Fuel prices being lower is kind of nice to see, but with no places to go that seems kind of silly.
Just sort of waiting & watching to see whatever may come along next...!

I am curious, is anyone able to use certain apps (e.g. Hangouts) with the TextNow Sprint data connection?

Yes.
Only a few things seem to be whitelisted but I've found that Google Hangouts, Facebook Lite, and Facebook Messenger Lite all work fine.
It seems to be down to the phone you use as all the ones I use are blocked. There was very limited hangouts use on one phone but it wasn't fully functional. Not sure what phone Chelle uses but she seems to have more available to her.
Interesting. I activated an iPhone 6s on that and was surprised see that Google searches fully work and that Hangouts received and sent messages.
I did not try anything else since Sprint service is bad here and I have not left the home. The logic was keep that phone with a GSM card and Sprint card active as a backup. So far, seems to exceed expectations (surprised with the voice quality here in the "woods").
Looking forward to more testing if I go to an are that has better service.
Take a look at ZZWang's posts on pages 10 and 11 of this thread concerning using GV with TextNow.
It's a Boost LG Stylo that I used on RingPlus.
Google voice sends and receives texts as well. Calls are surprising clear here where service can be at 1x.
As long as it gets 1 LTE bar, it seems to handle the TextNow VOIP just fine. I wonder if they have some sort of prioritizing for that traffic. Then again, the bandwidth required is likely super low.
Either way, I am thankful for the TextNow backup option. And if FreeUp were to give up on those free plans, this is another solution to that (though not as elegant with the Google Voice). Having the ability to text from Google Voice and text ability in Hangouts, even better. Thanks for sharing your experiences and thoughts!

Given the natures of things at present combined with my refusal to be in any manner panicked over what is happening...I really have very little that I am willing to say about it...hence my avoiding such discussions here.
I quit the dr. folk 30+ years ago and only got healthier since then - as well as having learned what viruses actually are (and actually what those things do and do not do) from more educated folks than myself - subject matter which I have no desire to debate about with anyone.
Not going anyplace has pretty much also cut down all the cellular uses as well - and what we have suffices, so no questions to be asked nor answers to anything here that I can provide.
BUT:
Plenty to do here at home as the full time domestic engineer with plenty of good materials to read during any free time.

In the past the only thing that the squirrels would not touch were
Habanero Peppers.
I will never try to plant lettuce again.
The snails and squirrels love lettuce.
