An alternative name for these dangerous zones could be "no trying to be cool zones" in that many people, particularly younger males, try to impress others with derring-do, often resulting in tragedy, or fatal photo ops. This rather informal study linked in the article did not, as far as I know, compare "selfie photo" fatalities with deaths from photos taken with non-smartphone cameras that existed before the smartphone age, an age where people were also acting "cool" and striving for the most impressive picture, though not a selfie per se.
