I don't know much about Republic's WiFi-first service-- it would be nice if someone is a subscriber and could offer an opinion about usability!

I understand that a downside of of Republic Wireless is that compatible devices must be Republic Wireless modified devices.

This was the case during initial launch, you would have to buy their phones with custom firmware. Is it still the case?

According to that page, an unlocked GSM phone is required. I guess that rules out most Sprint phones?

Republic now has Sprint and T-Mobile options.

BTW, speaking of Republic Wireless, great phone deal with free Republic GSM SIM.

BYOP is available, but appears limited to specific models. I believe I've read that is because of the requirements to enable WiFi-first.

List here-- I think for Republic v3.0

Buy an unlocked Moto G5 plus 64GB and get 6 months free with Republic Wireless.

G4, G5 or E4 and their plus variants all have the free 6 months. G4 play too and the G5S plus. Pretty sweet deal if you are looking for a cheap phone. All get $25 off too.

This article on PPPN indicates that Bandwidth spun off Republic Wireless as an independent company about a year ago.

Perhaps the earlier MVNO Profile article didn't get updated to reflect that?
