Just now catching up on this thread (+/- two weeks late). Glad your friend got everything working perfectly. And I hope you weren't too upset at yourself for not noticing something that you obviously couldn't have noticed, since you never saw the phone.
Older, not-too-technologically-savvy folks like myself always enjoy those rare occasions when the simplest solution works best.
